Dental Implant for Teens

Are dental implants safe for teenagers?

Teenagers cannot obtain dental implants until they reach a certain age due to age restrictions. Once a person’s adult teeth are in place, they can explore dental implants. Only teenagers with fully developed jaws are candidates for dental implants.

Natural teeth can still shift and change positions as a result of natural jaw development and growth. Implants, on the other hand, do not. Implants are permanent because they attach to the jawbone to replace tooth roots.

It is strongly advised that youngsters wait until they are above the age of 21 to have implant surgery. By that time, the jaw would have likely completed its growth or, at the very least, reached a stage where dental implants would be effective.

Missing teeth as a teenager can cause severe self-esteem issues. Missing teeth can make a teenager feel insecure and make them avoid social situations. Even if they are not yet old enough for implants, there are alternative options for replacing a lost tooth until they reach that age.

Are there any options apart from dental implants?

Removable Partial Denture

A removable partial denture is one of the most common alternatives for a teenager. A removable partial denture consists of a gum-colored plastic base with an attached artificial tooth that matches the kind, shape, and jaw location of the missing tooth.

Bridge

A bridge is another popular option. To support the bridge in the adult form, the teeth on each side of the missing tooth must be permanently altered. The teen’s bridge, termed as a “bonded” or “Maryland bridge,” however, is made up of little tabs of dental material. The expanded part of these dental components is then glued to the rear of the surrounding supporting teeth.

Orthodontics

Treatment using braces and clear aligners can shift the remaining teeth in certain directions, closing the gap left by the lost tooth. Dentists and orthodontists can both utilize these treatments. Dentists, on the other hand, have a narrower scope than orthodontists.

If your situation is straightforward, a visit to the dentist for braces is all that is required. An orthodontist is qualified to deal with difficulties that your teeth may have if the case is complicated. While experts are more expensive, keep in mind that you are paying for their knowledge as well as years of experience!
